something queer is going on here

Today at the gym....

Now that I have your attention...
No really. Today at the gym I was putting away equipment while truth about enzyte Knute, one of our trainers, was training another guy. Knute is a straight, blonde/Nordic, football player with the body to go with it. One of the nicest guys I know.

I know the guy being trained is gay, he and his partner have lived in Laguna a long-time, etc. So I said to him, "Hey Mike, are you are Rob married?" He said they were not. I said, "Oh, so you won't be affected whatever happens with Proposition 8" and he said no.

Then Knute looks at us both and says, "You know, 40 years ago it would have been illegal for me to marry my wife." Knute's wife is African-American.

Mike and I looked at each other, stunned. It really brought home what this Proposition 8 here in California means in regards to equality. Can you imagine ads on television saying "Do you really want your children being taught in school that it's OK for a white man to marry a black woman?"

I feel like Peter does regarding same-sex marriage; I see it as a civil rights issue. Knute's statement really hit me. I donated tonight on the No On 8 website because another donor is matching pledges dollar for dollar.

Hopefully history will be made on November 4, in alot of ways.

College

Lyle and I visited his/our godson yesterday at Whittier College. His first year of college, living in a tiny, tiny dorm with bunkbeds and 2 other guys. It was a typical dorm room- a mess. Clothes everywhere, posters everywhere. The kid is living the life of a college student, and I was so happy that he was doing well. He's a great kid, popular with girls and guys, real good looking (uh hello, click on his picture and blow that thing up- hate him!), athletic, smart. He's got alot going for him. Best thing about him is that he is of that generation and upbringing that has no problems with the gay issue. He is straight, but has absolutely no hesitation when describing another guy as "hot". This was in the context of him talking about his dorm neighbors, who was gay and who was straight, who was nerdy and who wasn't. One of his dorm-mates is gay as well, and I just got the feeling that in this day and age on a college campus, there is probably a world of difference than from when I was college-age.

I do feel like I missed out on the "college experience". Disney was a close facsimile, but still not the real thing. But then again, I probably would have thwarted my college experience by goofing off and being too social, hahaha.

Oh, and TONS of "No on 8" posters everywhere. What a great generation we have coming up in this world.

VIVA LAS VEGAS!!!

Lyle took me to Vegas for 2 days for my birthday and it was awesome!

The whole thing was kind of "surprise-y", where I didn't really know what we were doing or where we were going, and it was a whirlwind two days. He even bought me a new outfit to wear to our special night.

Some of the highlights:

I finally got see what all the fuss was about with Cirque du Soleil. First night was Ka at the MGM Grand Hotel:

Oh this show was absolutely mind boggling. The visuals, the mechanicals of the huge stage platform that rotated every which way, the imagination put into the show- just amazing. I think I said "wow" or "oh my god" about 30 times. It was astonishing the things the performers did and how the sets changed and all the special effects. Wow.

We went to dinner at Emeril's at the MGM Grand. Lyle, being in the restaurant business, picked it but he was kinda let down by it. We had a 6 course dinner there, so much food! I liked it, but the next night we were blown away by where we went (further down).

The next night we saw Zumanity at New York, New York. It was almost as crazy as Ka. The big difference was it was a smaller theatre, more intimate, and the show itself lent to a more intimate and personal experience, not as many special effects, but just as amazing with what those performers can do. And the bodies....jeez.

And we had an AMAZING dinner at Tender, the steakhouse at Luxor. The filet mignon was the best I think I ever tasted, and dessert was just incredible, flourless chocolate cake, creme brulee, and even a sampler of other desserts. I got a candle and a Happy Birthday written on my plate, then a sweet sweet card and a annual pass to Disneyland!

We did so much more than this, I mean I just got back and still processing all of it. He went to so much trouble and expense and thought for my birthday, I really love this guy!

GOT IT!!

Well, good news today! Lyle got his loan approved for his house. It's the perfect market to buy a house, but credit right now is drying up, so it was quite unclear whether the loan would be approved, as it's hard to get a car loan these days much less a house. But the loan officer called and he got it.

It's very exciting but there is also a lot of work to be done on this place. It will certainly be our project for 2009 that's for sure.

POLITICS

I hate blogging about politics, but seriously- why in the world are conservatives behind this choice for vice-president? I just don't understand and I'm trying to be objective, but if Democrats had put this woman out on their ticket, the Republicans would have laughed her off the face of the earth.
